NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The popular Five Boro Bike Tour has been postponed due to the impending impact of Tropical Storm Henri, the event's producer announced Friday night.
Bike New York announced that the Mayor's Office postponed the event, which was scheduled to cross the city Sunday. They said a new date is already in place -- August 29, a week from the original ride.
Officials have been tracking the path of Tropical Storm Henri for days and experts believe the storm will intensify to a hurricane by Saturday before making landfall in New England.
Long Island and Connecticut are expected to bear the brunt of the storm in the Tri-State area, but it is possible that New York City will see heavy rainfall and possible flooding.
According to the National Weather Service, weather conditions are supposed to be cloudy with a high of 85 degrees on Sunday. There is an increasing chance of rain, and the NWS notes a possibility of tropical storm conditions.
The Five Boro Bike Tour was canceled in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 40-mile tour begins in Lower Manhattan heading north to the Bronx. Cyclists will head through Queens and Brooklyn before crossing the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to Staten Island, where the tour ends in St. George.
Around 20,000 bikers are scheduled to participate in the event.
