NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Hit songs from ‘80s pop-rock sensation Huey Lewis and the News are making their way to the Broadway stage in “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” premiering next April.
The “raucous rom-com” follows “A couple of thirty-somethings who know exactly what they want from life—until they find each other. It’s going to take The Power Of Love—and a little help from their friends—to show them the way."
Lewis, who appeared on Broadway in 2009 as Billy Flynn in Chicago, is not in the musical nor is it based on his life. That hasn’t wavered his excitement for the project.
“We’ve been working on our show a long time, and we’re very proud of it,” Lewis said in a video announcing the show’s 2024 debut at the James Earl Jones Theater.
The show will feature Huey Lewis and the News megahits, from “Working for a Living” to “Stuck with You.”
Hunter Arnold, Tyler Mitchell and Kayla Greenspan serve as producers for the show, with a story by Mitchell and Jonathan A. Abrams. It is directed by Gordon Greenberg and will feature music by Brian Usifer and choreography by Lorin Latarro.
“I continue to believe that musical theater, because it’s so demanding, is also the most rewarding form of artistic expression,” Lewis said.
“The Heart of Rock and Roll” first premiered in 2018 at The Old Globe in San Francisco, breaking the record for highest gross performance.
Casting information and additional news will be announced in time.
