NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – In case recent headlines haven't made it inherently clear, the current state of crime of New York - and more specifically gun violence - is bad.
In the last two weeks alone a baby was shot in the head, another man was shot while sitting in a hospital waiting room, and two NYPD officers got gunned down in the line of duty - and that's just in the Bronx.
Now, shootings and homicides have steadily increased in the city since 2018, yet somehow New York is "safe" than it was decades ago. To put it in perspective, last year there were only 488 homicides in the city; however, in 1990 that number was larger than two thousand.
On this week's episode of 1010 WINS In Depth, host Femi Redwood tries to get to the bottom of the issue once and for all.
With the help of SUNY Professor Emeritus Robert Spitzer and New York City council member Kristin Richardson Jordan, she examines how the problem got so bad in the first place and explores several possible solutions the city is considering to combat gun crimes altogether.
