IN DEPTH PODCAST: Rising rents and the eviction epidemic in NYC

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – It’s no secret that New York has become one of the most expensive states to live in. According to the housing website StreetEasy, New York City rent is seeing its biggest increase in over a decade.

Remember a few years ago when politician Jimmy McMillan went viral for his simple slogan, “the rent is too damn high”? Now, the rent is even higher.

While it’s harder to find an apartment in the city, it’s even harder to keep it with the rising rent costs. That’s led to an equally problematic eviction epidemic.

Currently, there’s one proposed piece of legislation aimed at preventing drastic rent increases. Although its future seems uncertain, even if it passes it is only the first step to solving the state’s housing crisis.

On this episode of 1010 WINS In Depth, we hear from one of the lawmakers who helped write the bill in the hopes of understanding its importance. We also get insight on the issue from an indifferent real estate agent, and go over recent findings from Princeton’s very own Eviction Lab.
