James Caan, Bronx-born 'Godfather' actor, dead at 82

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Actor James Caan has died, according to a statement on his Twitter account Thursday.

"It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6," read the statement. "The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time."

The beloved actor, who grew up in Sunnyside, Queens is best known for his roles in films like "Misery," "The Godfather," "Honeymoon in Vegas" and "Elf."

He was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for his legendary performance as Sonny Corleone in "The Godfather."

Caan is survived by his five children, including "Hawaii Five-O" actor Scott Caan.

His cause of death has not been announced at this time.
