NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Mayor Eric Adams swore in Jessica Tisch as the new NYPD commissioner on Monday.

“It means so much to all of us that you have decided to take upon this task as we move our police department into the next level and deeper into the century and once again show why this is New York City’s finest,” the mayor said during a ceremony at police headquarters attended by Tisch's family.

Tisch, who was also retired as the sanitation commissioner at Monday's ceremony, is the 48th commissioner of the NYPD and the second woman to serve in the role after Keechant Sewell, another Adams appointee.

Tisch, 43, is a 12-year veteran of the NYPD and has been in city government for nearly two decades.

“To the men and women of the NYPD, my greatest hope is that together we will return this noble undertaking, this job of high moral purpose, to a time and a place where you want your children, your grandchildren, your nieces, your nephews, to follow in your footsteps and become police officers,” Tisch said.

She want on to say "the police exist to eliminate fear and disorder" and that NYPD officers "do a damn good job" of protecting New Yorkers.

"We will continue to do that most important foundational work to make you safe, to make you feel safe and to improve your quality of life across the city," she said.

The mayor announced last week that he'd appoint Tisch to the role, which was briefly held by interim commissioner Thomas Donlon following Edward Caban’s resignation in September.

Caban resigned after a federal investigation led to the seizure of his and other top police officials’ devices. He has not been charged.
