NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An American Airlines flight departing from John F. Kennedy International Airport was forced to dramatically halt its takeoff on Tuesday afternoon after the aircraft's tires on the left main landing gear blew out, the airline said.

"Shortly after 1 p.m. ET, American Airlines flight 2829 halted takeoff from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) due to a mechanical issue," the Texas-based airline said in a statement. "The aircraft stopped safely on the runway and customers are currently being transferred to the terminal via bus, where they are expected to board another aircraft with continuing service to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)."

The Boeing 737-800 stopped safely on the runway and customers were transferred to the terminal via bus, where they will board another aircraft with continuing service to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

The airline added, "We thank our crew for their professionalism and our customers for their patience."

There were no reported injuries to the six crew members and 142 passengers on board.

The aircraft was removed from service and towed to the American Airlines hangar for evaluation by their maintenance team.
