NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- JFK Airport is preparing for the arrival of refugees from Afghanistan by converting a cargo building into a processing center and temporary living quarters, according to a report.
Refugees are expected to arrive at JFK in the "coming days," and will be taken to the airport's Building 87, the Daily News reported Monday night, citing sources.
Aside from housing JFK's cargo operations, Port Authority officers and their K-9s train there.
Port Authority spokeswoman Cheryl Ann Albiez said the agency has not yet confirmed flights of Afghan refugees that will be arriving at New York City's largest airport, adding that any preparations for their arrival “are for contingency planning.”
The refugees may stay at Building 87 while federal officials look for permanent homes.
Many of the refugees are those who worked for the U.S. in Afghanistan, and fear reprisal for their work from the Taliban, who are now in control of the country.
So far, Afghan refugees have been flying into Dulles International Airport outside Washington and Philadelphia International Airport.
