NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Four newborn kittens are recovering after they were found double bagged and left to die "like trash" in a garbage can in Brooklyn this week, animal rescuers said.

A man heard the kittens crying from a trash can while walking at 45th Street and Ninth Avenue in Sunset Park on Sunday evening.

Anne Levin, executive director of the Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition and founder of the Brooklyn Cat Cafe, said “it was not an accident.”

“He found inside kittens that had been tied up, they’d been double bagged,” Levin said.

The good Samaritan contacted the cat cafe after finding the kittens.

“He reached out once he realized it was kittens inside,” Levin said. “He brought them to us at the cafe.”

He initially believed all or some of the cats were dead. But amazingly all four kittens—about two weeks old—survived the ordeal.

“Those kittens are very fortunate,” Levin said. “They definitely would have suffocated.”

The kittens are now being cared for and are doing well.

They are three tortoiseshell girls—named Unity, Unreal and Maya—and one gray-colored boy named Blender.

They’ll be put up for adoption in about two months. People interested in adopting can find out more at catcafebk.com.

Police are investigating the case.
