NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- For the first time, members of the media were invited to see the inner workings of a law enforcement coalition that focuses on gun violence and the actual people who pull the triggers.
It’s part of the daily meeting of the Gun Violence Strategic Partnership. Twenty-two law enforcement agencies have been meeting each morning since August.
Officials sit in the room each morning to review and coordinate on cases involving the city’s most violent criminals.
“And we’re getting the best results, keeping incarceration down, but getting the people who are doing the violence and shooting people off the streets,” said NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea.
On Thursday, the cases of six individuals were reviewed. Their history includes numerous violent crimes -- shootings, hold-ups, assaults and slashings among them.
Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said sharing information ultimately makes a better case against the criminal.
"An individual will probably have a contact point with multiple agencies that otherwise would not have had the opportunity to speak about that at the same time in the same place," said Vance.
Police officials said it’s the 1% of the 1% of the city’s population who commit most of the violent crime.
Shea said many of the cases they review involve gang members ages 18-25.
During an in-depth interview with WINS this week, Shea reiterated one of the more striking stats he’s seen in his time as commissioner — 10% of every arrest made of people under 18 years old involves a gun.
