People contract Legionnaires’ disease by breathing in water vapor contaminated with Legionella bacteria which grows in warm water. It’s not contagious and can be treated with antibiotics if caught early.

Four people have been diagnosed with the disease in Highbridge or neighboring areas since May 9, and more tests are pending.

No one has died from the disease so far, but it can be fatal if left untreated.

The city is sampling water in order to find where the bacteria is coming from.

Legionnaires’ disease is characterized by Flu-like symptoms. Those above the age of 50, cigarette smokers and people with chronic lung disease are at higher risk.

"Any New Yorkers with flu-like symptoms should contact a health care provider as soon as possible," said Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan. "Legionnaires’ disease can be effectively treated if diagnosed early, but New Yorkers at higher risk, like adults aged 50 and older, those who smoke or have chronic lung conditions should be especially mindful of their symptoms and seek care as soon as symptoms begin."
