
ROOSEVELT, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A 76-year-old Long Island woman was robbed after an unidentified man offered to help carry her groceries on Tuesday, Nassau County police said.
The theft happened around 3 p.m. in Roosevelt as the victim was walking on Nassau Road near the intersection of Debevoise Avenue. A stranger walked up to her and asked to help carry her grocery bags to which she agreed, police said.
When they arrived at the house, the suspect said that he had a winning lottery ticket but was unable to claim his winnings. The victim offered to cash the ticket on his behalf but the suspect said that he needed something as collateral.
She then gave some jewelry but the suspect said that it wasn’t enough and that she needed to take out $2,000 from the bank.
A little while later, an unidentified woman came to the residence in a white sedan and drove both the victim and suspect to the nearest Bethpage Federal Credit Union where she withdrew the money.
When the victim came back home, she realized she was scammed and contacted police.
The unidentified man is described to be in his 40s with a medium build wearing a blue shirt, a black baseball hat and glasses.
An investigation is ongoing.
