'Lion King,' 'Waitress' & 'Nutcracker' performances latest to be canceled due to COVID

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- More New York City performances were nixed Tuesday as omicron continues to hit the area hard.

"The Lion King" on Broadway announced all of its matinee and evening performances from Tuesday through Sunday, Dec. 26 were canceled.

The show is planning to resume on Monday, Dec. 27 at 2 p.m.

“Through our continuing rigorous testing protocols, breakthrough COVID-19 cases have been detected within the Company of ‘The Lion King’ at Minskoff Theatre” the show announced on Twitter.

“Waitress” announced its Tuesday and Wednesday shows were canceled out of "an abundance of caution," but intended to resume Thursday night.

Also on Tuesday, New York City Ballet canceled Tuesday's performance of "George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker" at Lincoln Center, the New York Times reported. It’s not known yet when or if it will return to the stage.

A Carnegie Hall performance of Handel's “Messiah” was also canceled, according to the venue's website, but is set to return in the future.
