NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The FDNY determined that a lithium-ion battery caused a fire that left one man dead and injured at least two others in Brooklyn early Wednesday morning.
The fire broke out just before 4 a.m. on the second floor of the a home located at 3110 Brighton 3rd St. in Brighton Beach, officials said.
A 69-year-old man died in the apartment that housed three adults and two children. Authorities said the man was sleeping in the room where the lithium-ion battery was being stored.
Two other adults sustained minor injuries when they attempted to put the fire out themselves. The two children were evacuated without injuries.
The battery was purchased online for a scooter and does not appear to be certified, according to FDNY officials.
