NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old suspect in the Dec. 4 fatal shooting midtown of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was never a member of the health insurance company, NYPD Chief of Detective Joseph Kenny said Thursday.
"We have no indication that he was ever a client of United Healthcare, but he does make mention that it is the fifth largest corporation in America, which would make it the largest healthcare organization in America. So that's possibly why he targeted that that company," Kenny told NBC New York.
Kenny said that Mangione may have targeted the CEO because of United Healthcare's size, adding, "He had prior knowledge that the conference was taking place on that date, at that location."
While Mangione fights extradition from Pennsylvania, he remains at the State Correctional Institution in Huntington. And prosecutors at the Manhattan District Attorney's office have also begun presenting evidence to a grand jury.
"I trust the DA [Alvin Bragg] here in Manhattan to make sure that he puts forth an indictment that is going to be ironclad," Gov. Kathy Hochul said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Thursday.

Officials hope to have Mangione back in New York with a governor's warrant, which is signed by the governor of a state where a fugitive flees after a crime. The governor in the state acts upon an official request from the governor of the state where the crime occurred. In this case, Gov. Kathy Hochul is expected to seek a governor's warrant from Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

"I want to get him back here in the state of New York," Hochul said, "and run him through our criminal justice system, because that horrific attack occurred on our streets, and the people of our city deserve to have that sense of calm that this perpetrator has been caught and he will never see the light of day again if there is justice."
