NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — Several riders were escorted off of Luna Park’s famed Cyclone roller coaster on Thursday after a malfunction in the motor room forced the operator to halt the ride, the city’s Department of Buildings said.

The technical team from Coney Island’s Luna Park told DOB inspectors on Friday that the 97-year-old roller coaster went out of service during an ascent the previous afternoon because of a crack on the chain sprocket in the motor room.

Several people were removed from the roller coaster without injury after the operator stopped the ride.

The DOB issued two violations to Luna Park after this malfunction, including failure to maintain (due to the crack in the sprocket), and failure to notify the DOB of an incident.

The Cyclone is out of service until the necessary repairs are made and DOB inspectors sign-off on its safety in a follow-up inspection, the agency said.

On Friday, a note on the Luna Park website read: “Cyclone closed for routine maintenance.”
