The incident occurred around 4 a.m. when a BMW 328 crashed into a median on the New England Thruway off of exit 12 and caught on fire, authorities said.

A 53-year-old driving 21-year-old Lyft passenger, Shakir Simpson, in a Toyota Camry, swerved to avoid colliding with the BMW and overturned, colliding with a Dodge Durango in the process, officials said.

Simpson and the Lyft driver were both taken to Jacobi Hospital where Simpson was pronounced dead and the driver remains in stable condition.

Police arrested the driver of the Dodge Durango, 27-year-old John Cetoute, for drunk driving and also charged him with vehicular manslaughter. Cetoute did not sustain injuries from the collision, authorities said.

The operator of the BMW was not inside of the car as it burned, police said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
