NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) — New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani is using another major sporting event to promote his push to make the city more affordable.
Mamdani and the United States Tennis Association announced that 1,000 discounted tickets for the US Open will go on sale for city residents on Wednesday morning. New Yorkers can purchase as many as two tickets for $100 each to main draw matches from Aug. 30 to Sept. 8.
The mayor’s move is similar to what he did for the World Cup earlier this summer and points to the rising cost of attending sporting and other entertainment events. For the US Open, prices on some resale platforms for the start of the first round on Sunday are above $300.
Last week, the USTA said it boosted the US Open purse 20% to $108 million, representing the largest player compensation package in the sport’s history. The tournament has become a bigger spectacle in recent years, with a shift toward more premium offerings.
