NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) -- Zohran Mamdani’s lead in the New York City mayor’s race over former Governor Andrew Cuomo has narrowed less than a week before Election Day, a Quinnipiac University poll found.
The poll released Wednesday shows Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, leading Cuomo among likely voters by 43% to 33%. It’s is the latest survey to show the contest tightening in its final days.
Returns from early voting, which began over the weekend, show high turnout among older voters, who polls show are likelier to cast ballots for Cuomo. The former governor lost the Democratic primary to Mamdani and is running as an independent.
Mamdani’s lead has shrunk from a Quinnipiac poll conducted this month, which found 46% of voters would choose him, while 33% would support Cuomo. Republican Curtis Sliwa would receive 14% of the vote, the new poll found.
For months, most polls have shown Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist and state lawmaker from Queens, with a comfortable double-digit lead over Cuomo.
Mamdani’s lead has also slipped in the betting markets in recent days. On Polymarket Wednesday, his chances of winning were 87% compared with 13% for Cuomo.
