Tomassetti was charged Wednesday with two counts of second-degree attempted murder and was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead, officials said.

Nassau County Police said during a news conference Wednesday that the defendant argued with his parents about his son at around 10 a.m. Saturday at their residence in Hewlett Harbor.

During the argument, he allegedly tried to leave their Seawane Drive home with his son when it turned violent.

"When the parents objected, the defendant produced a .22-caliber pistol. He struck his father then in the head with the gun numerous times after he ran out of bullets," Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said.

Nassau County Police said officers responded and found his 64-year-old mother, Vincenza Tomassetti, shot in the head and his 65-year-old father, Rocco Tomassetti, shot in the back and left wrist.

The victims were conscious and alert when they were taken to a local hospital for treatment. They have since been released. The child was not injured during the incident and is in the care of his mother.

Tomassetti fled in a Cadillac Escalade that was tracked down by authorities using a GPS, and he was arrested in Mahwah, New Jersey.

Tomassetti was held in Bergen County Jail, charged locally as being a fugitive from justice, and extradited back to Long Island on Wednesday to face charges.
