Man, 46, dies after striking barrier on expressway in Queens: officials

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 46-year-old man died after his vehicle struck a barrier on the Van Wyck Expressway in Queens on Monday, the NYPD's Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad said.

It happened at around 2 a.m. when police responded to a 911 call of motor vehicle collision at the Belt Parkway and Van Wyck Expressway in Jamaica, authorities said.


Upon arrival, officers observed Martin Garfield, unconscious and unresponsive, inside a 1999 Toyota Corolla.

EMS transported Garfield to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Further investigation by the determined that Garfield was driving the vehicle, traveling westbound on the Belt Parkway to the northbound ramp of the Van Wyck Expressway, when he failed to properly navigate the roadway, and struck a Jersey barrier at the location.

There were no other vehicles or individuals affected or injured. The investigation remains ongoing.
