NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A 62-year-old man was critically injured Thursday night after a driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into an MTA bus shelter on the Lower East Side, police said.

According to police, around 11 p.m. a 26-year-old man was driving a 2017 white BMW eastbound on Grand Street when he lost control of the vehicle as he turned onto Lewis Street.

"The car mounted the curb and collided with the 62-year-old male, who was seated inside of an MTA bus shelter. The vehicle then crashed into the shelter and came to a stop," the NYPD said in a release.

The victim was found unconscious and suffered considerable trauma to his lower body, officials said. He was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue in critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and was taken into custody following the crash. Charges against him are currently pending.

According to a New York Post report, the BMW driver was possibly drunk at the time of the crash.

Police said the investigation is ongoing by the NYPD's Highway Patrol Collision Investigation Squad.
