Man arrested for shoplifting dies in NYPD custody

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 47-year-old man who was arrested in January for shoplifting died in NYPD custody at a Manhattan hospital on Thursday, police announced Friday.

Travis Durkin was arrested on January 18 after trying to steal $40 of merchandise from a Duane Reade pharmacy on West 4th Street near Broadway in Greenwich Village, according to officials.

Durkin was found unconscious in a holding cell at a Manhattan courthouse while awaiting arraignment for charges of criminal possession of stolen property, grand larceny and petit larceny, authorities said.

Police did not make clear how he died or if he had known medical problems or injuries when he died.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine his cause of death
