NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A man attacked his wife's 3-month-old boy in East Harlem on Thursday morning before she hit him with a broomstick and police arrested him, the NYPD said.

The baby was in stable condition at Weill Cornell Medical Center following the assault, which left the child with lacerations to his head, neck and leg.

The 51-year-old man attacked the boy as he was arguing with his 26-year-old wife—who is the child’s mother—shortly after 12 a.m. in front of a building at East 101st Street and First Avenue, police said.

It wasn't immediately clear if the man is the child's father.

After the man attacked the boy, the mom hit him with a broomstick to protect her child, police said.

The man suffered a gash to his leg and ran away. He eventually encountered NYPD officers and falsely told them he'd been shot in the leg, police said.

He was taken into custody and was being held with charges pending.

He and the mom were also transported to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where the mom was treated for a laceration to her right arm and released.
