NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Two NYPD transit officers were assaulted on Wednesday afternoon by a man they caught drinking on a Manhattan subway platform, police said.

The officers were performing a transit inspection inside the West 4th Street subway station at 2:25 p.m. when they spotted the 36-year-old man drinking on the northbound A, C and E platform.

They asked the suspect to drop the bottle, but he instead smashed it and used the glass to slash one officer in the hand. He then bit the other officer in the leg, police said.

A witness at the scene told 1010 WINS that the aftermath of the alleged assault was chaotic.

"Emergency units, ambulance, and they ran into the subway, and then I saw a stretcher come out and someone was on the stretcher," he said.

Both of the transit cops were taken to an area hospital in stable condition, authorities said.

The suspect was taken into custody and charges are pending, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, and officers were still searching for witnesses inside and outside of the subway station early Wednesday evening.
