NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- An East Harlem man was arrested for allegedly raping a woman in the stairwell of an Upper West Side apartment building over the weekend, police said Monday.

Jamel McIver, 30, was cuffed Sunday evening and charged with rape, sexually motivated burglary and committing a criminal sex act. He was turned in by his family, police said.

Police allege he followed the 21-year-old woman into a building at West End Avenue and West 65th Street around 1:20 a.m. Saturday and attacked her in an elevator.

He dragged her out of the elevator and into a stairwell, where he raped her, police said.

He then forced her outside of the building before fleeing the area on foot, according to police.

The victim was transported to an area hospital in an unknown condition.

McIver was arrested less than 24 hours after police released surveillance video that appears to show the rapist ditching an article of clothing around the time of the attack.
