NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Officials charged a man accused of selling thousands of fake paper license plates in New York City, according to a report from the New York Post.
Octavian Ocasio, 49, sold up to 3,000 counterfeit paper tags that would allow drivers to bypass tolls as well as red-light cameras and make stolen vehicles seem legitimate, officials said.
In the past year Ocasio allegedly made over $250,000 from customers that included gang members and car thieves, the outlet reported.
Ocasio was arrested Tuesday at Long Island Buffalo Wild Wings by the FBI/NYPD Joint Major Theft Task Force and faces multiple conspiracy and wire fraud charges.
He and two others are also facing federal charges in Texas for their alleged roles in the two-state scam that sold over 600,000 fake license plates, the US Attorney's Office in Houston said.
On Wednesday, Ocasio appeared at a bail hearing in Brooklyn federal court where he was ordered held on $100,000 bond, according to court documents.
Prosecutors in both states argued Ocasio to be held without bail until he can be extradited to Texas, since he "was a fugitive for more than two months, repeatedly failed to turn himself in, and continues to engage in the crime," the documents noted.
