NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A 23-year-old man was charged with murder on Tuesday following the South Richmond Hill Shooting that left Treva Sookmangal dead earlier this month, authorities said.
The incident happened on Sept. 2 near a home on 125th Street, south of 101st Avenue. A fight broke out around 4 a.m. and took a violent turn when Singh punched Sookmangal in the face and moments later shot him in the chest, according to officials.
The police found Sookmangal, 31, on the floor and he was declared dead at Jamaica Hospital.
Singh, along with another individual, escaped but was caught in the Bronx at 2:30 a.m. the next day.
“We must stand firm against gun violence becoming a common response to disagreements,” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said. "This kind of behavior is intolerable, and those resorting to firearms will be prosecuted.”
Singh, a resident in Schenectady, now faces charges of second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree weapon possession, and three counts of second-degree menacing.
If found guilty of the charges, he could face up to 25 years to life imprisonment.
Singh's next court appearance is on Oct. 31.
