NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A man was shot by an off-duty New York City police officer in Washington Heights on Sunday night, police announced during a press conference.
This is the second fatal shooting involving an off-duty NYPD officer within a 48-hour period.
According to officials, at approximately 9:46 p.m., the off-duty officer was standing outside of a residential building at 173rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue when he was approached by two men riding on separate mopeds.
One man got off his moped, asked the off-duty officer if he knew a specific man who he listed by name. The off-duty officer then drew his gun and fired multiple shots, striking the man, NYPD Deputy Chief Eric Pagan said during the press conference.
The alleged gunman was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released, but police said he was 30-years-old.
The second individual fled the scene on his moped, police added.
A loaded 9mm firearm was recovered at the scene.
The officer was taken to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The shooting comes after a man identified as Jesse Campbell, 44, was shot and killed by an off-duty NYPD officer on Friday night on Staten Island.
