NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A man was indicted for repeatedly stabbing a subway rider as he slept on a Manhattan train last month, District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced Monday.

Angel Alvarado, 54, is charged with attempted murder, assault, attempted assault and three counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

According to court documents and statements, Alvarado was riding a southbound 2 train at 4:25 a.m. on Jan. 28 when he approached a sleeping 46-year-old man sitting across from him.

He began to repeatedly stab the victim with a sharp object, then dragged him through the door of the moving train in between two cars, prosecutors allege.

Passengers alerted the MTA conductor of the stabbing when the train pulled into the West 96th Street station, stopping the train. Police later arrested Alvarado on the platform.

The victim was transported to an area hospital to treat stab wounds on his neck, head, back, shoulder and arm, prosecutors said.

“As alleged, this was a brutal attack against a completely defenseless and helpless victim, and I hope he recovers quickly from his injuries,” Bragg said. “I know how scary this type of random violence against strangers is, and I want the public to know that we are going to continue to prosecute these cases and keep transit riders safe.”
