Man goes on anti-Asian rant, smashes woman's phone in Queens subway station: police

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A man made multiple anti-Asian remarks to a woman aboard a Queens subway train before slapping her phone out of her hand and smashing it in an incident being investigated by the NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force, police said.

The 35-year-old woman was aboard a 7 train inside the Main Street station in Flushing at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday when the man began hurling anti-Asian remarks at her, according to police.


The woman received a call and spoke in her native language as she recorded the encounter with her phone, police said.

The man made more anti-Asian remarks to the woman before approaching her and slapping the Samsung S9 phone out of her hand, according to police.

The man then picked up the woman's phone and smashed it to the ground, damaging the screen and phone, police said.

The woman, fearing for her safety, picked up her phone and ran out of the train car, according to police.

The man left the train at the Mets–Willets Point station, police said.

No injuries were reported in the encounter.

The NYPD said its Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating.
