NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – The NYPD is searching for a man who stole several donation boxes from a Staten Island mosque that had around $2,000 in them, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Friday, Oct. 13, at approximately 4:15 a.m.

The suspect entered the Islamic Center of Staten Island, located at 2546 Arthur Kill Rd. in Rossville, using a back entrance, police said.

He was caught on a surveillance camera which showed a salt and pepper-haired man making away with two donation boxes from inside the mosque and another four other donation boxes from the exterior.

He then ran away in a dark, older model sedan driving on Arthur Kill Road towards Rossville Avenue.

Police described the suspect to be in his mid-50s to mid-60s, of medium build, and with a light complexion.

He was last captured on video wearing a light-colored, long-sleeve shirt paired with dark pants.

There were no reported injuries from the incident.

The police have clarified that they are not currently investigating this as a hate crime. As of now, there have been no arrests.

The NYPD is seeking the public's help in identifying the burglar. Anyone with relevant information is requested to  call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
