NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Miguel Jiraud, the convicted sex offender accused of brutally beating a woman to the point of serious cognitive impairment as she biked home on a Randall’s Island bike path last month, was arraigned on Wednesday, prosecutors announced.
“A 44-year-old woman was riding her bike home from work when Miguel Jiraud allegedly brutally attacked her without provocation. To this day, she remains severely cognitively impaired,” District Attorney Alvin Bragg said.
Jiraud, 30, is charged with two counts of attempted murder, robbery and assault.
At about 11:30 p.m. on May 16, the woman left her job at a Harlem museum and got on her e-bike to ride home to Queens.
Soon after she rode over the footbridge onto Randall’s island, Jiraud allegedly attacked, stole her bike and fled the scene. Prosecutors said he later threw her bike into the Harlem River off the southern end of Wards’ Island.
The next morning, at 5 a.m., Jiraud called 911 claiming that he found her body on an early morning walk. When responders found the victim, she was unresponsive and had both her sweatshirt and shoes removed.
At NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst the victim was treated for multiple skull fractures, a puncture wound to her temple and abrasions across her body.
She also suffered massive brain hemorrhaging that required multiple surgeries, during which part of her brain and skull was removed to control intracranial swelling, prosecutors said.
Jiraud pleaded not guilty to all charges and is expected back in court on Sept. 17, court records show.
Police said Jiraud had been out of parole for a year after his conviction in a 2011 rape, and his address was listed as the Charles H. Gay Shelter Care Center For Men on Randall’s Island, near the attack location.
“This conduct is abhorrent,” Bragg said. “I hope she continues to recover from this terrifying assault, and I want to assure New Yorkers that we will ensure accountability for those who commit such acts of violence.”
