NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A man was fatally shot by NYPD officers at a Lower East Side apartment building on Sunday afternoon after police say he attacked his father and then advanced on cops with a butcher knife.
The shooting happened around 4 p.m. at 126 Ludlow St., where police responded to multiple 911 calls about an assault in progress.
When officers arrived, they found a trail of blood leading up a staircase and then encountered Ray Chan, 54, who police said was armed with a knife.
“As officers issued repeated commands the man continued to advance towards the officers, armed with the large butcher knife,” said NYPD Assistant Chief Melissa Eager. “Officers responded and discharged their firearms, striking the subject.”
Chan was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
His father suffered cuts to his head when he was attacked by Chan, police said. He’s expected to recover.
Several officers were also taken to a hospital for evaluation.
The butcher knife was recovered at the scene.
Police said the entire incident was captured on bodyworn camera and is being investigated by the NYPD’s force investigation division.
