NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Manhattan’s iconic 21 Club, which has been around since the days of Prohibition, is among the latest restaurants to shut down amid the pandemic.

The restaurant filed a notice Wednesday with state Labor Department in which it said it would “indefinitely” cease operations, according to the New York Times.

The restaurant, which shut its doors as the pandemic was intensifying last March, plans to lay off all of its employees in March 2021, according to the report.

In a statement to Fox News, a spokeswoman for the restaurant’s owners, Ülkü Eruçar-Kenny, said: “In light of the ongoing global crisis and anticipated extended recovery period for the hospitality industry, the difficult decision was made that it will not be feasible to reopen the 21 Club in its current form for the foreseeable future.”

“The company is exploring potential opportunities that will allow 21 Club to remain a viable operation in the long term, while retaining its distinctive character,” Eruçar-Kenny said.

The famed restaurant on W. 52nd Street has counted everyone from presidents to celebrities like Frank Sinatra among its guests since opening as a speakeasy during Prohibition in the 1920s. The restaurant is said to be a longtime favorite of President Trump.
