Manhole fire on UES sends smoke into the air, officials urge 'avoid the area'

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A manhole fire on the Upper East Side Tuesday night sent thick smoke into the air, leading officials to urge people to stay away from the area.

"Due to reports of manhole fire in the vicinity of East 91st Street & 1st Avenue on Upper East Side, please expect increased emergency personnel. Both @ConEdison & @FDNY are on scene, please avoid the area," ConEd and the NYPD's 19th Precinct tweeted.
