'FIRST PET' OF NYC? Adams 'going to find a nice dog' for Gracie Mansion, reveals breed he wants

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Mayor Eric Adams said Thursday that he's looking to get a dog for Gracie Mansion and revealed the breed he's most interested in.

"I'm so tempted," Adams told 1010 WINS' Susan Richard. "You know, I tell my staff all the time, 'Gracie Mansion needs a dog.'"

Richard asked Adams if he planned to adopt a pet, noting that the Animal Care Centers of NYC is overrun right now with more than 550 animals—a 54% increase from this time last year.

"I love dogs so much, and I am looking at—I want a German shepherd," Adams said. "I was disappointed to learn that the police department, they do not turn over their German shepherds after they finish their assignments."

Adams said he loves dogs and hasn't had one since he was a kid.

"I just miss a dog, the compassion, the caring that they are," he said.

The mayor brought up a shooting at a Brooklyn store on Sunday night that left a 36-year-old woman and her dog dead.

"It broke my heart," Adams said of the shooting. "It just tore me apart."

"But I am going to look for a dog," he said. "And you just motivated me again. I'm going to find me a nice dog."
