Mayor concerned about off-campus housing students

Byron Brown

BUFFALO (WBEN) - On Thursday afternoon, Mayor Byron Brown was joined by representatives from the University at Buffalo and Buffalo State to announce a partnership focused on encouraging off-campus students to follow public health guidelines.

"What we have observed at other college campuses around the nation highlights the importance of being proactive and having a plan in place to engage with residents, students and landlors, so that everyone understands the critical role we all play in keeping ourselves and our neighbors safe during this pandemic," said Brown.

Beginning this weekend, City of Buffalo inspectors will conduct a door-to-door outreach campaign in the University Heights neighborhood to check on occupancy numbers and to provide materials on best health practices.

At Buffalo State, city officials will work with management at off-campus student housing developments to provide materials on social distancing and masking, as well as implore students to limit large gatherings.

"Throughout the summer, we have been stressing to our new and returning students the need to do their part this semester," said Buffalo State's Vice President of Student Affairs Timothy Gordon. "Not only do students have a responsibility to keep themselves safe by wearing masks and socially distancing, but students have an even greater responsibility to keep their community safe."
