NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio on Thursday unveiled the "2021 Student Achievement Plan" to address learning loss caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and help kids recover academically.
According to the mayor, the plan targets the needs of kids and families in order to reckon with a challenge that is "the way that COVID has stood in the way" of kids' education.
"The fact that there has been learning loss and still will be learning loss ahead that we have to compensate for and then overcome," de Blasio said.
The mayor outlined a plan he said will close the "COVID achievement gap" and take the city forward into the next school year.
"Our approach will be based on everything that we've learned during this very trying time," de Blasio said.
The 2021 Student Achievement Plan consists of:
- Getting a baseline of what ground was lost
- Increasing high quality digital curriculum available for every school
-Launching a one-stop digital learning hub
-Deepening professional development
-Expanding “Parent University”(parental support and resources)
-Confronting the trauma and mental health crisis faced by students
There will be additional information announced over the next few days and weeks to come, both the mayor and Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza said.
