Former Lucchese mobster Anthony 'Gaspipe' Casso dies in prison after contracting COVID-19

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Former Lucchese mobster Anthony “Gaspipe” Casso died in prison after contracting the COVID-19, officials said.

According to the Bureau of Prisons website, the 78-year-old died Tuesday.

Casso’s lawyers sought compassionate release last month, writing to a judge that their client had contracted COVID-19 while serving a life sentence in United States Penitentiary, Tuscon.

Brooklyn federal Judge Frederic Block denied his early release, citing that "in light of the nature and extent of defendant’s criminal history, that he remains a danger to the community."

Casso pleaded guilty to 14 mob murders was underboss who was behind dozens of killings and also. infamously employed two NYPD detectives as mafia hitmen in exchange for a monthly $4,000 salary.
