NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Real New Yorkers take the subway, and one baby born on a southbound W train in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning is starting early.
Good Samaritans called 911 when they realized that a 25-year-old woman aboard their train was in labor, but the baby girl was born in the subway car before assistance could arrive, officials said. It is still unclear who handled the delivery.
According to NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow, numerous passengers approached the conductor to report the birth as the train was stopped at the 34th Street-Herald Square subway station at about 11:32 a.m.
The conductor held the train at the station and responded to the car containing mother and child, along with a NYC Transit Train Service Supervisor and multiple NYPD officers.
EMS quickly joined and transported the woman and her baby to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. Despite the impromptu delivery room, authorities said that both mother and child are in good condition.
"This is another example of New Yorkers coming together to help each other, assisted by caring transit workers and other responders, reflecting the best of the subway community and this city," Crichlow said. "We are thrilled that both mother and Baby W are doing well, and look forward to welcoming both of them back aboard for a lifetime of reliable—and hopefully less dramatic—rides.”
