NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — An MTA bus struck and killed a 45-year-old man in lower Manhattan on Friday night before driving off, police said.
The pedestrian was struck at Avenue D and East 10th Street in Alphabet City at around 10:40 p.m., and the driver left the scene. Police discovered the 45-year-old with trauma to the body.
The victim, who officials identified as Shawn Gooding, of Manhattan, was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue where he was pronounced dead.
It was not immediately clear what vehicle struck the victim, but an investigation later confirmed that it was an MTA bus.
The investigation found that the victim was at the southwest corner of the Avenue D and East 10th Street intersection when he tripped and fell into the roadway, near a marked crosswalk.
The MTA bus, driven by a 59-year-old man, was headed eastbound on East 10th Street and had a green light. He made a right turn onto Avenue D, and the rear of the bus struck Gooding.
Police said that it is unclear whether the driver knew they had hit someone when they drove off.
The MTA directed 1010 WINS/WCBS 880's request for comment to the NYPD.
"We don’t want to impede on their ongoing and active investigation," the MTA said. "Much of the information is still preliminary, so we want to make sure we respond accurately."
No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
