NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Some MTA riders Monday morning got an accidental sneak peek at the planned increase to the subway fare, being charged $2.90 instead of the standard $2.75.
Earlier this month, the MTA board agreed to bump up the price of a subway fare by 15 cents, starting on Aug. 20. But for commuters using OMNY to swipe past the turnstile, the new $2.90 cost came three weeks early.
According to a statement by MTA spokesperson Aaron Donovan, anyone who got overcharged using OMNY will get reimbursed 15 cents per transaction. MetroCard users were unaffected by the error, which the MTA says got resolved at 9 a.m. Monday morning.
The agency attributes the error to Cubic, the MTA's vendor, who designed and operates the OMNY payment system. Per Donovan, Cubic "erroneously and prematurely implemented software changes intended to take effect on August 20." Cubic itself was brought in to fix the issue.
It's currently unknown how many commuters were affected by the premature software change, or how they'll be refunded.
"The MTA thanks our customers for bringing this to our attention quickly and apologizes for the inconvenience," Donovan said.
