NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Multiple sharks were spotted in the waters off Queens over the long holiday weekend, temporarily forcing the closure of Rockaway Beach across several days.

The latest sighting was at Beach 102nd Street on Sunday afternoon -- a sighting that closed the beach for at least an hour.

There was also a sighting between across Rockaway Beach on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. No injuries were reported.

Kaz Daughtry, the city’s deputy mayor for public safety, wrote on X that the NYPD’s drone team spotted a shark just 100 feet from swimmers near Beach 113th Street on Saturday evening.

A fleet of drones operated by the NYPD, FDNY and NYC Emergency Management patrol the city beaches looking for sharks. Gov. Kathy Hochul said last week that state agencies have also put drones to the task.

“From the sky to the surf, we are constantly patrolling with drones to detect both shark activity and distressed swimmers. This is how we stay ahead of danger—and keep New Yorkers safe,” Daughtry said.

The sightings come after a suspected shark bit and injured a 20-year-old woman at Jones Beach on Long Island late last month.
