NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – The 130-year-old statue of Christopher Columbus in Central Park was vandalized with red paint, police said Tuesday as they released video of two suspects.

The pair targeted the bronze and granite statue on the night of Feb. 26. Police said they sprayed the base with “Murderer” and “Give us our land back.”

Video shows the masked duo crossing a barricade surrounding the statue of the contentious 15th century explorer.

The suspects are wanted for criminal mischief, police said.

The statue, which was dedicated in 1892, sits on the south end of the Mall, north of the 65th Street Transverse. It has been vandalized in the past.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
