NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — For the second year in a row, Nassau County has been named the safest community in America by U.S. News & World Report.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran on Monday reacted to the news, saying that intelligence-led community policing is the reason why the county has been able to remain so safe.

“In which law enforcement gathers existing data about arrests, criminal records, domestic incidents, drug overdoses, traffic stops, gang activity – it takes all of that data and then runs analytics against that data to better identify patterns, and accordingly allocate police resources,” Curran said.

The report looked at violent crime rates, vehicle crash fatality rates and per capita spending on health and emergency services to complete its ranking on 25 counties.

“Nassau County will not be resting on our laurels. That is why I have proposed 70 new positions, additional positions… in next year's budget for law enforcement, which would expand the number of sworn officers in the county for the first time since 2009,” Curran said.

U.S. News & World Report analyzed 3,000 municipalities across the country to establish its ranking, according to the Nassau County executive.

Rockland County was ranked the second safest community in America, while Westchester County claimed the fourth spot.

Bergen County in New Jersey was ranked in the eighth spot while Queens and Brooklyn were listed at numbers 13 and 18, respectively.
