According to police, an individual tried to approach two men who were trying to open the Verizon store's doors at 880 Old Country Rd. in Garden City, and one of them "pointed what appeared to be a handgun at him, placing him in fear for his life," police said. The victim drove away and called 911.

Officers responded to the scene around 2:43 a.m. and located one of the subjects, Jonathan Parra, 26, of Westbury, in front of 435 B Old Country Rd.

As officers approached, Parra turned and threatened the officers with "what appeared to be a firearm." The officers discharged their weapons and shot the 26-year-old in the leg. The other subject fled the scene on foot.

Parra was arrested and officers applied a department issued tourniquet to his leg to control the bleeding, police said. He is charged with two counts of second-degree menacing and will be arraigned at a later date.

The two officers, along with Parra, were taken to a hospital for treatment. Their conditions have not been released.

An investigation is ongoing.
