TRENTON, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A New Jersey state senator introduced a bill last week that would impose fines of up to $20,000 for the sale of non-flushable baby wipes.

The bill, which was introduced by Democratic State Sen. Joseph Cryan, is predicated on the fact that non-flushable wipes can damage municipal septic systems when disposed of in the toilet — costing taxpayers money.

If signed into law, the legislation would fine anyone selling non-flushable wipes $10,000 for a first offense and $20,000 for subsequent offenses.

The bill will now be considered by the state senate’s commerce committee.
