NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Police are searching for a half-dozen young suspects who they say stole an R train and took it on a joyride in Queens last weekend.
New video released Wednesday by the NYPD shows the six suspects—who appear to be around high school age—entering the unoccupied R train at the Forest Hills–71st Avenue station around 10:20 p.m. Saturday.
The group commandeered the train and posted video of the joyride to Instagram, police said. The video shows them traveling at a decent clip—about 30 mph—and even dangling perilously above the tracks below.
They also allegedly damaged glass panels on the train’s cameras by placing markings on them.
They were last seen fleeing the train on foot.
According to police, the train had been left secured on a layup track. MTA personnel returned later to find it missing.
There were no passengers aboard the train at the time, and no injuries were reported.
This isn't the first time teens have commandeered a subway train. Indeed, a group of young people stole two trains last January from the same subway station in Forest Hills.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
