NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- New York Cares continued its more than three-decade-old coat drive Saturday — but this year it's going to even bigger lengths.
When New York Cares officials got to this year's coat drive, its 33rd, they already saw lines blocks long in Queens.
"I would say that it's very apparent that the need in this city is exceptionally high, and will continue to be for quite some time," said Jenny Goldschein, chief development officer for New York Cares.
Because of that growing need, New York Cares created the Coats Plus Program, which for a $25 donation, gets the organization one coat and gives it the ability to prepare ten meals for New Yorkers.

New York Cares is accepting used coats once again, but a financial donation toward a new coat could better meet the need.
"We love the donation of coats, we accept them happily, but as it always happens year after year, we can never meet the entire demand that's out there," said Goldschein.
Large coats are what New York Cares is looking for most. It estimates that as many as 2,000 recipients came to its drive Saturday.
The group is aiming to raise $600,000 through the end of the year to help New Yorkers in need.
